He also loves listening to all kinds of music, and like just about everyone on the planet, "Ted Lasso" has become a favorite show. He is a big fan of Liverpool Football Club in the English Premier League and is excited about Charlotte's very own MLS team! Allen and his wife, Casey, have two girls, Abby Grace (16) and Ila (12).

The position calls for training and credentials in psychology, social work, counseling or psychiatric nursing, but rather than providing treatment, the director will triage parishioners to the right places for help. In addition to being on the church campus at least two Sundays a month, he or she will be available to respond to crises at any time. The roots of Christ Church’s mental health ministry trace back to the 2008 recession. Realizing that many in the congregation were having their lives turned upside down, the church organized a Sunday morning forum called “The Wisdom of Contentment” and invited members to come and share their struggles out loud. And most significantly, the church has begun a search for a wellness director, a new full-time position that will focus on mental health as part of a holistic understanding of what it means to be well. Sacred Ground is a resource coming out of Becoming Beloved Community, The Episcopal Church’s long-term commitment to racial healing, reconciliation, and justice in our personal lives, our ministries, and our society.

The church building had been under construction for three years. It was undertaken and completed by several families in the area, including the Lash and Hairston families. Cora Futon received the first baptism in the church on June 20, 1886. Despite its growing support of mental health, the congregation was shocked by the rash of suicides. Among the dead was a 20-year-old college student, a 51-year-old businessman and father of two who was active in the church, and the Kocmonds’ son Nathan. As Scholar-in-Residence, Dr. Suzanne Watts Henderson teaches, preaches, and serves as a resource for the clergy and spiritual formation teams to foster deeper spiritual growth across the whole parish.

– Contemplative Holy Eucharist (Church)This service of Holy Eucharist has contemporary language and an emphasis on contemplative space and music. Holy Eucharist Rite I with Choral Music (11 a.m. service during the program year) – This Rite I service follows traditional Rite I language and includes a sermon and Holy Eucharist with rich music led by the Christ Church choirs. Lauren completed her Bachelor of Music in Music Education at Florida State University in 2015 and graduated from the University of South Carolina in 2019 with her Master of Music in Opera Theater. During her time at Florida State and The University of South Carolina, she was involved in opera programs, performing lead roles. Lauren began teaching elementary music and voice in the fall of 2015 in Orlando, FL. In addition to her classroom teaching experience, she has also received training in vocal pedagogy and performance at Florida State University and the University of South Carolina.

Until July of 1887, the church was without stove, chancel furniture and window glass. The church was consecrated on July 28, 1887 during which a number of clergy participated, as the Convocation of Charlotte was in session. On July 24, 1887 seventeen persons were confirmed at the church’s first Confirmation service. In 1891, the name of the church was changed from “Church of the Holy Comforter” to Christ Church. The sacraments are outward and visible signs of inward and spiritual grace, given by Christ as sure and certain means by which we receive grace. The two great sacraments are Holy Baptism and the Holy Eucharist.

Edens said the ministry isn’t based on the belief that Jesus alone can heal what ails us. God, he notes, works through many means, including health care, exercise, meditation and more. The support group was formed after the congregation was rocked by a half-dozen suicides within five years — a series of traumas that affected nearly everyone at the church, the largest Episcopal congregation in North Carolina. This series is especially designed to help white people talk with other white people, while being open to all racial/ethnic groups.
